An Arlington police officer is in jail after Island County sheriff’s deputies hit a Camano Island home with a search warrant Monday, seizing evidence and arresting the 41-year-old on suspicion of possessing images of minors in sexually explicit conduct. The officer, whose name is being withheld until formal charges are filed, has been placed on administrative leave.
Search Warrant On Camano Island Leads To Arrest
Investigators with the Island County Sheriff’s Office served the warrant at a residence on Panoramic Drive on Camano Island, where they took the off-duty officer into custody, according to KOMO. The 41-year-old was booked on multiple counts of first-degree possession of depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and is scheduled for a first appearance in Island County Superior Court. Officials said the Arlington Police Department is cooperating with the investigation.
Arlington Police Call Allegations ‘Deeply Troubling’
The Arlington Police Department described the accusations as “deeply troubling” and said that, if proven, the alleged conduct would be “in direct opposition to the values, oath, and mission” of the agency. At the same time, the department stressed that the officer is entitled to the presumption of innocence and due process while a criminal investigation runs in tandem with an internal administrative review, both governed by state law and collective bargaining agreements. The department said the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the case moves forward, according to KOMO.
Felony Stakes And What Comes Next In Court
Under Washington law, first-degree possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct is a Class B felony, and each image can count as a separate offense, per the Revised Code of Washington. Potential sentences depend on the number of counts and other factors. The officer is expected to face the court process in Island County Superior Court while prosecutors determine whether to file formal charges. Island County officials said the investigation remains active and that more information will be released as it becomes available.
