What should have been a routine midday drive on Loop 820 turned deadly Monday, when a vehicle slammed into a bridge pillar in west Fort Worth, went over an overpass and landed on its roof, killing the driver and shutting down all southbound lanes.
Fort Worth police said the wreck was reported around 12:25 p.m. near White Settlement Road. The violent rollover brought traffic to a standstill as emergency crews moved in and officers closed the freeway to manage the scene and keep drivers away from the debris field.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, officers confirmed that the vehicle had struck a bridge pillar, rolled, and was found on its roof. The paper reported that the driver was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the victim’s identity. A police call log cited by the Star-Telegram captured one 911 caller’s alarming report that a “car flew off the bridge and is now on its roof.”
As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the White Settlement Police Department said Fort Worth officers shut down the southbound lanes and will lead the investigation. The Chronicle noted that Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed officers pushing vehicles toward the nearest exits while crews worked around the damaged car. When the Chronicle published its update, officials had not given an estimate for when the freeway would reopen.
Traffic Snarls And Alternate Routes
The closure arrived right in the heart of the lunch-hour rush, and it did not take long for traffic to stack up. TxDOT warned drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes, the Star-Telegram reported, as southbound traffic was funneled off at nearby exits.
Frontage roads and surrounding surface streets quickly filled with frustrated drivers trying to improvise detours while tow trucks and cleanup crews staged along the freeway. Motorists headed for the west side were urged to build in extra travel time or use different corridors until all lanes could safely reopen.
Why This Stretch Sees Crashes
Loop 820 is one of the region’s workhorse corridors, carrying a steady mix of commuter traffic and heavy trucks around Fort Worth, and it has seen more than its share of serious wrecks and lane closures in recent years. Hoodline’s earlier coverage, Loop 820 Turns Deadly, detailed a January multi-vehicle crash that killed a driver and highlighted ongoing concerns about congestion and safety on the loop.
Local officials have pointed to continuing TxDOT projects that are intended to boost capacity and cut down on collisions along the corridor, although Monday’s fatal rollover is a grim reminder of how quickly a single crash can shut down a key route and ripple through the afternoon commute.
As the Houston Chronicle noted, traffic cameras continued to show drivers being redirected as officials held back from announcing a clearance time. More information is expected once the Fort Worth Police Department and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner complete their work and release additional details.
