Fourteen years after Janell Clayborne’s body was discovered in the woods near the Patapsco River, her sons say they are still stuck in the dark. Baltimore County detectives say her 2012 death remains unsolved while investigators wait for DNA testing from an item recovered at the scene. With little movement in the case, the family is again urging anyone who remembers suspicious activity along the Frederick Road corridor to speak up.
Discovery And Early Investigation
According to WMAR‑2 News, Baltimore County police say two bicyclists found Clayborne’s body on the morning of June 10, 2012, in a wooded area near River Road and Frederick Road in Catonsville. Investigators said she had been choked to death and was nude from the waist down.
Cpl. Dona Carter of the county’s cold‑case unit told WMAR‑2 News that witnesses reported seeing Clayborne walking on Hollins Ferry Road the night before. Detectives "can trace her movements up to a point" before she vanished, Carter said. Police say they are now waiting on DNA results from testing an item recovered from Clayborne’s body as they revisit the case.
Cold‑Case Tools And New Possibilities
Detectives in Baltimore County have increasingly turned to modern DNA testing and genealogical methods to breathe life into old investigations. Reporting by The Baltimore Banner details how those tools helped identify the victim, long known as the “Falls Road Jane Doe.”
Nationally, private labs and forensic genealogy outfits have helped crack decades‑old homicides, producing fresh leads where traditional testing stalled, according to Othram’s pressroom. Authorities say the testing now underway in Clayborne’s case is part of that broader push to re‑examine preserved evidence and run it through newer techniques.
Family’s Call For Justice
Clayborne’s sons, Jaleal and Tyreese, were 16 and 12 when their mother was killed. They say the years without answers have left a lasting void. "Something needs to be done about this," Jaleal told WMAR‑2 News, adding that "there has to be justice."
Baltimore County Police are again asking anyone who noticed suspicious vehicles or activity along the Frederick Road corridor around the time of the killing to come forward. Tipsters can call the department at 410‑887‑3943.
