An overnight fire that tore through Saad’s Halal Restaurant in Center City Philadelphia was no accident, officials say. Fire crews rushed in before dawn, knocked the blaze down, and cleared the scene without any reported injuries. Police and fire investigators have now opened a criminal probe into how and why the flames were set.
Arson ruled after early-morning blaze
Police and fire units were dispatched at about 3:47 a.m. to the 4500 block of Walnut Street, and the Philadelphia Fire Department classified the incident as arson by about 7:15 a.m., according to NBC10 Philadelphia. No injuries were reported, and authorities have not announced any arrests connected to the blaze. Investigators say the case remains active, with more details expected as the work continues.
Neighborhood staple damaged
Saad’s Halal, a longtime local favorite known for cheesesteaks and shawarma, operates on the 4500 block of Walnut Street and regularly draws customers from University City and Spruce Hill. Hoodline previously highlighted the spot in a neighborhood feature, noting its long tenure at the address in a neighborhood roundup. Officials have not yet disclosed how extensive the damage is inside the restaurant or when the business might be able to reopen.
Investigation moving forward
The Philadelphia Fire Department’s website notes that the agency maintains specialized divisions that handle fire investigations and hazardous materials incidents, typically working alongside police in suspected arson cases. Those units are tasked with combing through the debris, pinpointing where the fire started, and helping determine exactly what happened as the criminal probe moves ahead. Investigators have not released a timeline for their findings, and further updates are expected once they complete their work at the scene.
