A late-night boat fire tore through a vessel at a City Island boatyard on Sunday, sending thick smoke drifting over the Bronx shoreline and drawing a heavy FDNY response. The blaze broke out around 9:40 p.m. at 25 City Island Ave, and firefighters stayed on scene well into the night. Officials said there were no injuries as crews worked to bring the situation under control.
FDNY says crews remain on scene
Video from the scene shows flames shooting from a boat in what appears to be a yard filled with other vessels, while FDNY units crowd the narrow waterfront street. According to News12 Bronx, the department sent 21 units and 79 fire and EMS personnel to the call. Operations were still underway late Sunday, and no injuries had been reported.
Past marine emergencies underscore complexity
City Island and nearby Hart Island are no strangers to dangerous marine emergencies. A charter-boat fire in June 2025 injured more than 20 people, led to an arrest and triggered a multi-agency rescue effort, as detailed in boat fire injures 22 off City Island coast. That incident highlighted how FDNY marine units, the NYPD and the Coast Guard must coordinate when emergencies unfold on the water.
Officials: cause not yet released
Authorities have not yet released a cause for Sunday night’s City Island blaze and said operations were continuing as firefighters made sure the boat and surrounding yard were fully secured. Investigators are expected to examine the vessel and the area around it, and we will be watching for further official updates from FDNY and other city agencies, per News12 Bronx.
