Next Saturday, Clark County is going all in on an unusual world record attempt: building what organizers hope will be the world’s largest blanket fort inside the Desert Breeze Community Center. Commissioner Justin Jones has teamed up with nonprofit Foster Kinship and students from West Career and Technical Academy to pull it off. After the invite-only build, the finished fort will turn into a “parents’ night out,” where roughly 150 foster and kinship children will play while caregivers finally get a few hours to breathe.
According to FOX5, the Guinness World Records attempt is scheduled for next Saturday at Desert Breeze and is being backed by sponsors including the Las Vegas Grand Prix and Vegas Valley Law. The outlet reports media will be allowed inside to watch the construction unfold, even though the build itself is closed to the public.
Students Lead Design And Build
Foster Kinship’s event page says students from West Career and Technical Academy will handle the design and construction of the massive fort, turning the effort into a hands-on engineering project for local teens. Foster Kinship also notes that Guinness World Records charges a $15,000 adjudication and certification fee, so the nonprofit is seeking sponsors, donations, and volunteer support to cover materials, the fee itself, and staffing for the kids’ experience inside the fort.
The Record To Beat
According to Guinness World Records, the current largest blanket fort covers 1,141.79 square metres (12,290.12 square feet). That mark was set by Cub Scouts Pack 502 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on May 13, 2023. To make it into the record books, Clark County’s fort will have to beat that footprint while an official Guinness adjudicator is on-site to verify the attempt.
Event Logistics And Kids' Night
FOX5 reports the public will not be allowed to attend the build, but cameras will be invited in to capture the giant blanket palace taking shape. Once the measurement and verification are complete, about 150 children connected with Foster Kinship and Clark County Family Services will get the run of the place, with games, entertainment, and support offered inside the fort while caregivers take a short but much-needed break.
Why Officials Back The Effort
According to Clark County Family Services, respite programs and community partnerships are critical for kinship and foster caregivers. The county notes that free community-based respite opportunities, including events like Foster Parent Night Out and summer camps, help stabilize placements and connect caregivers to resources. Organizers say this blanket-fort record bid is aimed at filling that same kind of gap, blending a big publicity swing with a few hours of real relief for families.
What To Watch For
Organizers say an official Guinness adjudicator will be on hand to determine whether the fort surpasses the current record, with results to be announced after certification is complete. If the numbers add up, Clark County’s caregivers and kids could walk away with both a world record and a rare evening of low-stress fun under the blankets.
