A Pinellas County man is sitting in jail after Largo police say he used Grok, the AI image tool tied to X, to crank out nude photos of a woman who had no idea what was happening. Authorities identify the suspect as Devin Rudd and say he allegedly pasted the woman’s face onto a generated nude body using the chatbot’s image functions. Rudd remains held in the Pinellas County jail while detectives comb through devices and online accounts linked to him. The case gives the Tampa Bay area its own entry in a growing list of criminal investigations involving AI tools that can churn out intimate, nonconsensual imagery.

According to an arrest report cited by KTLA, Largo police arrested Rudd on May 20 and booked him on seven counts of generating an altered sexual depiction of a person without consent and two counts of possessing child sexual abuse material. Investigators say he pulled photos from the woman’s social media, then used Grok to splice her face onto nude images. The report states that detectives reviewed activity linked to an xAI account and seized media from multiple devices as part of the probe.

Grok's Global Backlash, Local Fallout

Grok’s image capabilities have already been under intense international scrutiny after researchers and officials found the chatbot could be prompted to generate thousands of sexualized images, including some that appeared to depict minors, according to Reuters. Around the United States, law enforcement has tied alleged Grok outputs to other criminal cases. Metro Nashville police said an April arrest involved images traced to an xAI account, as reported by WSMV. In Florida, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said a suspect in Escambia County confessed to using Grok to generate child sexual abuse material, according to NorthEscambia, and deputies in Palm Beach County reported that an alleged AI‑altered nude image was sent to groom a 17‑year‑old, as detailed by Local10.

Legal Implications

Attorneys general and other officials have been pressing xAI to toughen Grok’s safeguards and cooperate fully with investigators, arguing that existing laws should cover nonconsensual AI imagery just as they do traditional photos. Michigan’s attorney general, along with a bipartisan group of counterparts, urged xAI to shut off features that enable nonconsensual intimate images and to remove illegal content, according to a state press release from the Michigan Attorney General's Office. In the Pinellas County case, prosecutors are expected to review seized phones and account records before deciding whether to pursue additional charges.

The Largo Police Department says the investigation is still active and that detectives are continuing to track digital leads tied to the alleged AI activity. More information is expected to emerge as the state attorney’s office goes over the arrest report and evidence assembled by investigators.
