A 14-year-old girl reported missing from Whitehall Borough over the weekend was found safe in Nanticoke on the other side of the state, and a Luzerne County man is now under arrest, police said. Investigators say the teen was lured through social media and located after detectives traced her online contacts to a home in Nanticoke in what authorities described as a coordinated, fast-moving, multi-agency response once tips and device data pointed to a suspect.
Arrest and charges
Twenty-seven-year-old Christopher P. Jones of Nanticoke was arrested by the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force and is facing counts that include unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of a minor, and criminal attempt to commit several sex offenses, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Whitehall Borough police said they secured an arrest warrant before federal agents took Jones into custody and transported him to local authorities for booking.
How investigators tracked her
Whitehall officers first reported the teenager missing late Saturday, and the Pennsylvania State Police issued a Missing Endangered Person Advisory the next day; she was last seen in the 4900 block of Curry Road, according to ExploreClarion/EYT Media. Court documents reviewed by WPXI say the two had communicated on the chat platform Discord and that messages found on the girl's tablet included travel plans and instructions for a "cover story" to explain the trip. Investigators say they used the suspect's phone records and traffic-camera footage to trace his route to Luzerne County, where officers located the teen at a Nanticoke residence.
Who helped locate her
Whitehall Police Chief Jason Gagorik highlighted the double-edged nature of social media in a news release, writing that "Social media can be a powerful tool, not just for connection, but for locating individuals in urgent situations." Multiple federal and local agencies, including the FBI, the Secret Service, Allegheny County police, and Nanticoke police, assisted in the search, per CBS Pittsburgh.
Online enticement is rising
The episode mirrors a national uptick in online enticement and exploitation reports: the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children says CyberTipline reports of online enticement and AI-related exploitation have surged in recent years, with online enticement reports jumping substantially in mid-year data. Those trends, NCMEC officials write, help explain why digital forensics and tips from the public are increasingly central to missing-person investigations. Legal charges explained
Police say Jones faces state counts, including unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of a minor. Under Pennsylvania law, unlawful contact with a minor (18 Pa.C.S. § 6318) can be charged when an adult intentionally communicates with a child to facilitate sexual activity and may carry felony penalties depending on the underlying conduct. The statute also allows the Attorney General concurrent jurisdiction when contact occurs through a computer or network, according to Pennsylvania law.
What happens next
Jones remains in custody while prosecutors and police continue their investigation; it was not immediately clear whether additional charges will be filed. Anyone with information was asked to call Whitehall Borough Police at 412-884-1100 or to call 911 in an emergency, local reports noted. (WPXI).
