A mid-afternoon fire in a busy office building near Loop 410 and Broadway on Wednesday sent one person to the hospital and pulled a multi-unit response from San Antonio firefighters. The blaze erupted inside a second-floor suite, but crews moved fast and knocked it down before it could jump to neighboring offices. Firefighters kept the flames contained to that single unit, and officials reported no structural collapse. The person found outside with burn injuries admitted to starting the fire and was being evaluated by medical staff.
According to WOAI, the San Antonio Fire Department said the fire started around 2:35 p.m. on a couch in the second-floor suite and did not spread beyond that office. Nearby suites were evacuated as a precaution while crews snuffed out the flames. The department told WOAI that the injured person was transported to a hospital for treatment and for questioning about a possible motive.
San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Joe Arrington told WOAI the individual "was transported to the hospital for treatment and further questioning" and added that crews were "very fortunate" no one else was hurt. Investigators stayed on scene to comb through the suite and speak with witnesses as they continued their work.
Why a Couch Can Be Dangerous
Upholstered furniture like couches can supercharge a fire, helping it grow quickly and pump out heavy smoke that endangers both occupants and first responders. Federal testing by NIST found that an unprotected couch can push a room to flashover in minutes unless safeguards such as barrier fabrics, sprinklers or other protections are in place. For more on the fire dynamics behind furniture-fueled blazes, NIST offers detailed technical findings.
Investigation Continues
Authorities said the investigation remains active and no criminal charges had been released as of Wednesday evening. Everyone else in the building was reported safe once crews cleared the scene. Officials asked anyone with video or information to contact investigators. This story will be updated if additional details are released.
