A late-night confrontation on the northern edge of Skid Row turned deadly Tuesday when a 63-year-old man was fatally stabbed in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded around 9:46 p.m. to reports of a cutting on the 500 block of North Main Street, where they found the man suffering from stab wounds. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, and homicide detectives have opened an investigation into the killing.
Officers were called to the 500 block of North Main, between Winston and Sixth streets, after witnesses reported that the man was stabbed during a confrontation, an LAPD spokeswoman told City News Service, according to MyNewsLA. Video from the scene shows detectives, a crime-scene photographer, and a tent covering the body as investigators collect evidence, the outlet reported.
Where It Happened And Local Context
The killing unfolded just north of the Skid Row corridor, an area that has been the focus of county housing and outreach efforts in recent years. The Skid Row Action Plan has moved nearly 1,000 people into permanent housing and roughly 2,000 into interim placements, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.
The neighborhood has also seen other recent fatal incidents, including a stabbing near Union Station in April, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Investigation And Tips
LAPD homicide detectives are investigating, and so far, no suspect description has been released, MyNewsLA reported. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Los Angeles Police Department or submit an anonymous tip to LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or via lacrimestoppers.org.
This death is the latest violent episode in central downtown this spring, including a recent Skid Row shooting covered locally, and it underscores the challenges officials face in pairing public-safety responses with housing and services for the area's most vulnerable residents, as three were shot in a mystery attack and county officials note. We will update this story if LAPD or county authorities release further details.
