A Sunday night shooting in the Melrose section of the Bronx left a 34-year-old man dead, according to police. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found the victim with a gunshot wound to the back in front of 360 E. 161st Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. EMS rushed him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead.
Police later identified the victim as 34-year-old Javan Jones. Investigators said they are still working to piece together what led up to the shooting. As of late Sunday, there were no arrests, and detectives were canvassing the block and reviewing nearby surveillance footage, as reported by News12 New York.
Citywide crime backdrop
The killing comes as city officials continue to highlight an overall drop in gun violence, even as individual shootings still rattle neighborhoods. In an April press release, the NYPD said the first quarter of 2026 recorded 54 murders and 139 shooting incidents, which ties an all-time low, and credited targeted enforcement for the decline, as outlined by the NYPD.
Investigation ongoing
NYPD detectives are leading the investigation and have released few details about a possible motive or suspect description. Officials have urged anyone who might have seen or heard something to come forward, as reported by News12 New York.
This story will be updated if police release additional information or announce any arrests. Anyone with tips is asked to contact the NYPD.
