A vacant Hempstead house turned into a fatal crime scene before sunrise when an early-morning fire ripped through the structure, leaving two people dead and part of the building collapsed. The blaze heavily damaged the home and drew a major response from area fire departments. Authorities have not yet released the victims' names and say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Massive response to a 1:28 a.m. call
According to News 12, 911 calls came in around 1:28 a.m. reporting a fire at 45 Sycamore Avenue. Ten fire departments responded, sending roughly 75 firefighters to the scene, and crews were able to bring the blaze under control in about two hours. Firefighters encountered heavy flames and reported a partial collapse of the house while they worked to knock down the fire.
Previous fire at the address
A local photographer's working-fire registry shows that the same address, 45 Sycamore Avenue, was the site of a previous fire on Oct. 29, 2025, documenting earlier damage to the property, according to Over The Edge Photography. Vacant-house fires like this are notoriously tricky for firefighters, with hazards that can include hidden flame pockets and unstable floors that raise the risk during searches.
Damage, victims and investigation
Fire officials told News 12 that two people were discovered inside the home while firefighters were battling the blaze. The Village of Hempstead Building Department responded to assess the damage and secure the property. Officials said the house sustained extensive damage and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. No additional details about the victims had been released as of early May 10.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office is expected to lead the investigation, and local authorities say they will release more information as it becomes available. Neighbors and officials may provide further updates through village or county channels in the coming days.
