A day at a Milwaukee marina turned tragic Thursday when a boat fell on a person at CenterPointe Marine, killing them on land rather than in the water, authorities said.
Emergency dispatchers classified the incident as an extrication, a term typically used when someone is trapped and must be freed by rescue crews. Firefighters had to lift the vessel to reach the victim. The person was pronounced dead, and investigators have not yet determined an official cause of death. The victim’s name has not been released.
According to the Milwaukee Fire Department, crews were called to 700 South Water Street and used equipment to raise the boat so they could remove the person, as reported by TMJ4 News. Officials told the outlet they did not yet know how the boat fell or whether it had been in storage or in the water immediately before the incident. TMJ4 said it is continuing to follow the developing story and will share updates as officials release more information.
Where It Happened
CenterPointe Marine’s Milwaukee location sits near the mouth of the city’s harbor and markets itself as a full-service facility for boaters. The company advertises haul-out, storage and refit services, along with a fuel dock, indoor heated storage and slips for boats and yachts. That kind of work routinely involves moving large vessels onshore as part of maintenance and seasonal storage. CenterPointe Marine describes the site as a hub for local boating traffic, which helps explain how a serious on-land incident involving a boat could occur at the property.
Boating Safety And Reporting
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources tracks fatal boating incidents statewide and requires written reports for any incident that results in a death, serious injury or significant property damage within 10 days. Annual summaries and individual incident information are available on the agency’s crash and fatality page, which the public and investigators can use to review safety trends and regulatory requirements, according to the Wisconsin DNR.
What Officials Are Saying
Fire officials told TMJ4 News that they remain unsure how the vessel toppled and that the case is still under investigation. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene, but no further details have been released about the victim’s identity, the nature of their injuries or whether any criminal inquiry might follow.
This story will be updated as the fire department, medical examiner or local law enforcement agencies release additional information.
