Two people were killed and a third was left clinging to life Wednesday after a crash in the 1600 block of Westinghouse Boulevard in southwest Charlotte, shutting down a key stretch of road and choking traffic across the Steele Creek area.
Emergency crews closed Westinghouse east of South Tryon Street while investigators worked the scene, and the ripple effects were felt throughout the busy corridor as drivers crawled through detours or sat in backup traffic. No names have been released, and police say the cause of the collision is still under investigation.
As reported by Queen City News, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said two people died in the crash and MEDIC crews rushed a third victim to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Officials shut down the roadway east of South Tryon and urged drivers to find alternate routes while crews cleared the wreckage. Investigators stayed on scene into the evening as they collected evidence.
Where the Crash Happened
Westinghouse Boulevard cuts through the Steele Creek corridor, a busy southwest Charlotte stretch that carries both commuter and freight traffic and ties into several major arterials. The Charlotte Observer reported this month that Westinghouse and nearby intersections were among locations being considered for a red-light camera pilot designed to reduce severe angle crashes, a sign that planners already had the corridor on their safety radar. That planning backdrop adds a sharper edge to the tragedy of this latest deadly collision.
How Authorities Are Responding
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department operates an online traffic feed that pulls active incident information from its 911 CAD system and is updated frequently to give near real-time route information. While officers work to piece together what happened on Westinghouse, motorists in the area should expect delays and follow posted detours.
Officials have not released the names of those involved and say the investigation remains active. Queen City News noted that police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
