SWAT officers converged on downtown Los Angeles on Thursday after police opened a shooting investigation near 600 West 5th Street, with officers establishing a perimeter as tactical units moved in to secure the area.
According to FOX 11 Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that its Metropolitan Division SWAT team was called in because a suspect refused to surrender. The outlet reported that the incident centered on the 600 block of West 5th Street and that authorities did not immediately release further information.
As of Thursday evening, officials had not identified any suspects or said whether anyone was wounded. The LAPD had not provided additional details beyond its initial confirmation of the response.
Why SWAT Was Deployed
According to the LAPD, SWAT is sent to barricaded and hostage situations and to incidents in which a suspect “refuses to submit to arrest.” The department also cites factors such as a suspect believed to be armed or holding a position of advantage as reasons for a tactical callout. LAPD guidance notes that negotiation and containment are emphasized wherever possible to resolve high-risk situations safely.
Downtown Context
The response comes as downtown has seen multiple shootings this month, including a Skid Row incident in early May that left several people wounded, according to the Los Angeles Times. That recent violence has kept residents and business owners on edge and fueled calls for increased patrols in the area.
What Officials Say Now
No arrests or official injury reports had been announced as of Thursday night. Investigators said they would release more information as it becomes available, and authorities are expected to provide an update once the situation is fully resolved.
