Palm Springs is getting ready for a platinum-blonde takeover. Over the weekend of Marilyn 100, organizers are planning a centennial bash that will climax on May 30 with a massive gathering of Marilyn Monroe lookalikes circling the towering Forever Marilyn statue. The goal: roughly 500 participants in identical white dresses and platinum wigs raising a synchronized toast under the desert sun. The celebration lines up with a major Marilyn museum exhibition opening the next day in Los Angeles.
According to Palm Springs Pride, Marilyn 100 runs May 29–June 1, with the official Guinness certification window on Saturday, May 30, slated for 4:30–6 p.m. Downtown, the action will center on the Forever Marilyn statue and spill into the surrounding area with live performances, food activations and a coordinated "martini or mocktini" toast.
To join the lookalike lineup, participants have to register. For a $75 fee, each "Icon Kit" includes the signature white "subway" dress, a stylized platinum-blonde wig, cat-eye sunglasses and a martini glass, according to Visit Palm Springs. Costume pickup will happen at the Renaissance Hotel and the Hyatt Palm Springs in the days leading up to the record attempt, with boutique hours also available on the morning of the event.
Palm Springs has long traded on its connection to Monroe, and the 26-foot Forever Marilyn sculpture has become one of the city’s most photographed calling cards. Local outlet KESQ reports that the record attempt will unfold around the Downtown Park at Museum Way and Belardo Road, just steps from the Palm Springs Art Museum.
Marilyn On Display In L.A.
The desert festivities are timed to sync with a major Los Angeles museum show. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open "Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon" on May 31, featuring hundreds of original objects and an extensive display of screen-worn costumes, including Orry-Kelly designs from Some Like It Hot and the famous pink satin gown by William Travilla. The exhibition is scheduled to run through February 28, 2027 and is included with general admission, according to the Academy Museum.
The Guinness World Record to beat stands at 254 people dressed as Marilyn Monroe, set in Brighton, Australia, on Feb. 2, 2020, Guinness World Records lists. Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, and the coordinated centennial programming in Palm Springs and Los Angeles is timed to that birthday, per Britannica.
How To Join And Where The Money Goes
