Today, Detroit rolled into Memorial Day under a low gray ceiling, with patchy dense fog cutting visibility and slowing some commuters before the steady warmup kicked in. Morning readings hovered in the upper 50s, with most neighborhoods expected to climb into the upper 70s by midafternoon on light east-northeast winds of 2 to 7 mph.
Morning Fog Drags Down The Drive
According to the National Weather Service Detroit, a Special Weather Statement flagged patchy dense fog with visibilities near one mile or less through daybreak, prompting a reminder for drivers to slow down and stick with low beams. Forecasters expect the fog to lift quickly, generally within an hour or two after sunrise, leaving mostly clear skies in its wake for the rest of the day.
Sun-Filled Memorial Day And A Warm Midweek
Once the haze burns off, this day is on track for mostly sunny skies and a high near 79°F. The real warmup arrives tomorrow, with temperatures pushing to around 85°F. By Wednesday, readings could reach the upper 80s, with a slight chance of late-afternoon showers or isolated thunderstorms, mainly west of I-75 and south of I-69. Otherwise, high pressure should keep conditions mostly dry until more seasonable temperatures slip back in later in the week.
Game Plan For Outdoor Events
Most Memorial Day ceremonies, cookouts, and park hangs look good once the early fog clears out, although anyone on the road before sunrise should allow a little extra time. With afternoon sunshine and warm air in the mix, sun protection will be as essential as the grill. Boaters and riverfront visitors are urged to check the latest forecasts if they plan to head out later in the week, when winds and seas can change more quickly.
