A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy assigned to the Walnut/Diamond Bar area is off the streets after being arrested in connection with a theft investigation in Diamond Bar. The deputy, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody last week and remains relieved of duty while the department and investigators sort through the allegations.
The deputy was arrested on grand theft charges last Thursday, then cited and released, according to NBC Los Angeles. The Sheriff's Department said it learned of the allegations one day before the arrest and quickly opened an internal criminal inquiry.
Department response and investigation
For now, the deputy will not return to work while the internal criminal investigation plays out. "Any employee who violates the law or breaches the public's trust will be held accountable," the department said, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. In other words, the badge does not come with a free pass.
What relieved of duty means
Relieving an employee of duty is a tool the department can use while administrative or criminal investigations are underway. As outlined by the LASD Manual of Policy and Procedures, unit commanders and Internal Affairs may pull deputies from standard duty when allegations could lead to demotion or discharge, in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
Broader context
The arrest lands in the middle of heightened public scrutiny of the Sheriff's Department, which has faced several high-profile misconduct cases in recent years, as reported by The Los Angeles Times. Those cases have triggered prosecutions, internal reviews, and louder calls for more consistent accountability.
Investigators have not released details about the alleged thefts or the deputy's identity, and specific charges and any upcoming court dates have not been disclosed. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff's Station, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
