Pittsburgh kids and grown-up Disney nostalgics are getting their wish this weekend. This Saturday, the Disney Store will quietly but firmly step back into the local retail scene with a limited-time pop-up at Ross Park Mall. Doors open at 10 a.m., kicking off with an opening ceremony where one child will be picked to place an oversized key into the lock to officially "unlock" the shop. Mall staff says capacity will be capped, and a QR-code system will be used to reserve shopping windows during busy stretches. The temporary store will sit on the upper level near Macy's and the food court and will carry a mix of classic favorites and exclusive items.
New pop-up format, two-city test
Back in April, Disney pulled back the curtain on its new "Disney Store Limited Time" format and tapped Ross Park Mall as the first test site, with a second temporary location headed to Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., according to the Disney Parks Blog. The company says the goal is to bring storytelling back into in-person shopping, with immersive design elements and daily opening ceremonies built into the concept. Ross Park Mall's own listing notes that the store is being run by Go! Retail Group and places the space on the upper level near J.Crew and Capital One Cafe, per the mall. That setup means local staff will be employed by Go! Retail Group rather than Disney's former retail division.
What shoppers will find
Inside, shoppers can expect apparel, accessories, plush characters, collectibles and select park-only merchandise, including an "It's A Small World" line and collectible pins, along with a short run of Pittsburgh-themed black-and-gold t-shirts and other local nods, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Simon Property Group's Shema Krinsky told CBS that Ross Park is "first in the country" to roll out the new format and said the mall's tenant mix made it an easy choice. The outlet also reported that there is no firm end date for the pop-up yet, other than a commitment to stay open through the holiday season.
How long will it stay?
Mall officials say the Ross Park pop-up is guaranteed to remain in place at least through the holiday shopping rush, though a closing date has not been set. Local coverage notes that the store will manage crowds with pre-booked shopping windows and strict capacity limits, and that it will follow the mall's regular schedule, which includes earlier weekday openings and extended weekend hours, according to WPXI. Simon and Disney are treating the project as a test of appetite for in-person Disney retail and will be watching closely to see whether the limited-time idea earns a longer run.
What this means for local retail
Disney closed many of its traditional mall stores over the past several years and had largely stepped away from that format by 2021, which makes this limited return to Pittsburgh notable, CBS Pittsburgh reports. For Ross Park Mall, an upscale center that has steadily drawn national brands, the pop-up is both a bragging point and a potential traffic magnet if regional Disney fans show up in numbers. Whether the experiment turns into longer-term storefronts will likely depend on sales, foot traffic, and how smoothly the booking system handles peak shopping times.
The Disney Store Limited Time opens at 10 a.m. this Saturday. The mall's official store page and local reporting outline full hours and booking instructions. For the official listing and in-store details, check coverage from KDKA and the center's site at Ross Park Mall.
