A quiet Monday in downtown Clayton took a grim turn after a person was found dead at the Heritage Court Apartments and officers arrested a suspect at the scene, according to town officials. Neighbors reported a heavy police presence as detectives moved in and began working the case inside the small apartment building.
Authorities received a call about the incident around 9 a.m., and responding officers took a person into custody at the complex, a town spokesperson told the Raleigh News & Observer. The spokesperson said the apartment building remained open and that there was no danger to the public, while the Clayton Police Department declined to release additional details as long as the scene was active.
WRAL reported the death may have been the result of a stabbing, sharing radio traffic in which officers can be heard describing “a male subject that stabbed a female or is stabbing a female” as they entered the building. According to WRAL, officers detained one individual shortly before 10 a.m.
Police Response
Investigators have not yet released the names of either the victim or the person taken into custody as they continue processing the scene. The Clayton Police Department has characterized the case as an active homicide investigation and is asking anyone with information to come forward while detectives collect and review evidence, the News & Observer reported.
Where It Happened
The call came in for Heritage Court Apartments on East Main Street in downtown Clayton, a small complex near the town center. Public records and federal housing documents place Heritage Court at 809 E Main St, according to a listing for the development from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, available through HUD.
What Residents Should Know

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Clayton Police Department. For emergencies, residents should call 911; non-emergency contact options and phone numbers are listed on the Clayton Police Department website. WRAL noted town officials’ reassurance that the broader community is not believed to be at risk.
This is a developing story, and details may change as authorities release more information.
