Downtown Tampa’s Gen X Tavern, the neon-lit, ’80s‑and‑’90s–themed bar at 103 East Jackson Street, is closing this summer, with plans to keep pouring drinks and blasting throwbacks through July 4, 2026. Owner Dave Burton is calling it less a goodbye and more a reset, saying the space will be transformed into a new concept later this year.
According to Creative Loafing Tampa, Burton announced the decision in a Facebook post, thanking DJs, musicians, staff and regulars and saying "it was one hell of a run and I wouldn't trade a single moment of it." The outlet notes that Gen X opened in spring 2019 and is slated to stay open through July 4, 2026.
Owner Plans a Retro-to-Modern Reboot
In a text to Creative Loafing Tampa, Burton said he will remain involved with whatever comes next in the downtown space and "hopes to have a new concept open by October." He added, "Change is inevitable, and the only way to stay ahead of it is to recreate yourself," framing the shutdown as a planned reinvention rather than an abrupt exit.
What Gen X Served and Why It Stuck
Gen X made its name by leaning hard into nostalgia, pairing throwback cocktails with playful comfort food. Adult Capri Sun pouches, boozy spins on Sunny D and arcade‑era decor helped the bar double as both watering hole and time machine. The tavern’s official site lays out its food and drink lineup, hours and a peek at the retro interior that turned it into a late‑night draw; see Gen X Tavern for details.
Burton’s Tampa Bay Footprint
Burton is already a familiar name in the Tampa Bay dining scene. Local coverage links him to SoHo Sushi in Tampa and the Stormrunners Tavern project in Gulfport, indicating the Gen X lease is staying with seasoned operators. Reporting on the Gulfport venture confirms his involvement in those projects, according to St. Pete Catalyst.
Regulars have until July 4 to squeeze in a final round of nostalgia nights, DJ sets and arcade memories before the downtown bar is reworked. Burton’s farewell message doubled as both a thank‑you to loyal patrons and a teaser that a reimagined concept will keep the corner’s nightlife buzzing in the months ahead.
