East Sacramento just picked up a new neighborhood indulgence. Pastry Cat, a cat-themed bakery from pastry chef Nariya Charoensupaya, has quietly opened its brick-and-mortar shop at 533 53rd Street. The bakery held a soft opening in late April and for now is keeping things low-key with a weekend-only schedule.
During the soft opening, the counter was stocked with specialty cookies, including salted Valrhona chocolate chip, miso brown butter and matcha yuzu almond. The shop is currently listed as open Fridays through Sundays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to The Sacramento Bee, which also notes that Pastry Cat cookies previously turned up at OffBeat Coffee in Upper Land Park.
From Pop-Up To Corner Shop
Pastry Cat started as a pandemic-era pop-up, where Charoensupaya built a following by selling at Saturday coffee counters before locking in a permanent home. Earlier filings showed plans to remodel a retail space in the Sutter Triangle development, signaling that a long-term move to East Sacramento was in the works.
Charoensupaya trained at the Culinary Institute of America and has logged time in a range of kitchens, from small bakeries and a chocolate shop to Michelin-starred restaurants, according to Turton Commercial Real Estate. The brick-and-mortar opening brings that experience down to a compact neighborhood corner storefront.
What’s On The Case
The pastry case leans classic but plays with Asian-inspired flavors. Yelp lists regular items such as almond croissants, Korean cream cheese garlic buns, cinnamon roll donuts and scones. Reviewers there consistently praise the croissants and often caution that popular items sell out quickly, suggesting an early morning visit if you are chasing specific pastries.
The setup skews more grab-and-go than linger-all-morning cafe. The focus is on quick service, a tight menu and small batches of pastries rather than a long-stay coffee shop vibe.
Small Windows, Big Demand
With short weekend hours and a narrow morning service window, items tend to move fast. Fans were already thanking the owner for bringing Pastry Cat into a permanent space, The Sacramento Bee reported. For now, the routine appears to center on modest daily runs of cookies and pastries tailored to those early hours.
Pastry Cat is registered as Pastry Cat LLC in state business filings, with a May 19, 2025 formation date and Nariya Charoensupaya listed as a principal, according to records compiled by BizProfile from the California Secretary of State.
