Hurst has a new way to beat the Texas heat: Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has landed on Precinct Line Road, bringing the Ohio-born brand’s made-on-site scoops to the neighborhood. The shop is run by father-and-son team Cameron and George Summers and opened this month, serving a rotating lineup of flavors churned fresh daily, plus nondairy sorbets. Fans can expect the company’s signature hand-scooped style and a mix of classic and seasonal varieties as specialty ice cream spots spread across North Texas this spring.
Grand opening and the freebies
To make a splash, Handel’s held a formal grand opening on Thursday and rolled out an opening-day deal: the first 100 guests scored free ice cream for a year, according to a press release via NatLaw Review. Company materials list the shop’s opening time as 11 a.m., and contractor registration documents filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation put the unit at 6100 Precinct Line Road, Suite 100, in Hurst.
Made here daily: flavors and dairy-free options
The Hurst shop is set up to scoop 48 flavors made fresh on-site each day, backed by a broader lineup of seasonal favorites that rotate throughout the year, according to Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. The company’s flavor categories also include vegan sorbets and dairy-free options made with almond and coconut milk, giving customers who avoid dairy something beyond the usual sherbet fallback.
The team behind the counter
The operation is a true family affair. George and Cameron Summers own and run the Hurst location, with 26-year-old Cameron bringing six years of franchise experience and prior roles as a Wingstop manager and district manager, while George is a longtime physical therapist in North Richland Hills who has owned businesses for years, according to the Fort Worth Report. Cameron told the outlet that launching the shop with his dad has been “pretty exciting,” and the pair says they want the space to function as a neighborhood gathering spot.
Part of a North Texas scoop boom
The Hurst outpost joins a broader wave of specialty scoop shops opening across Dallas–Fort Worth this spring, from the high-profile Texas debut of Salt & Straw to other chains expanding around the region, as reported by The Dallas Morning News. It is also the latest step in Handel’s North Texas expansion, adding to existing Tarrant County locations in Arlington, Burleson, and Southlake, according to AOL.
