FLAT ROCK, Mich. - A routine Amazon route in this Downriver suburb went sideways yesterday when a driver walked off the job and started tossing packages into a residential street, according to police. Neighbors dialed 911, officers scooped up the scattered boxes, and then took on an extra gig: finishing deliveries for residents who had been waiting for those parcels.

Three Flat Rock officers responded to the call and determined that the driver had quit mid-shift and hurled multiple packages into the roadway, ClickOnDetroit reported. Officer Porter and Officer McCardle gathered and secured the abandoned boxes. According to the same report, Amazon then temporarily designated Sergeant Beggs and the officers as delivery drivers so the parcels could still reach their intended doorsteps that day.

Police Step In To Make Deliveries

Once the packages were accounted for, officers went door-to-door, handing them directly to the named recipients instead of leaving them exposed at the curb. It made for an unusual extension of their shift, but police told reporters their priority was making sure customers did not lose items they had paid for and were expecting that day.

Not an Isolated Problem

The Flat Rock episode joins a growing list of delivery mishaps caught in public view. In March, a driver in Walker, Louisiana, was recorded dropping a bag of Amazon packages at the side of a neighborhood street, WBRZ reported. And in December, surveillance video in Metro Detroit showed a delivery driver destroying a package before a neighbor stepped in to rescue and deliver it, according to WXYZ.

Why It Matters

Labor groups and street-safety advocates argue that the high-pressure, subcontracted nature of last-mile delivery - with tight quotas and high driver turnover - contributes to these kinds of incidents. A Teamsters analysis contends that Amazon’s structure turns NYC streets into a hazard zone, and supporters say those same pressures can make one-off blowups like the Flat Rock walk-off more likely and tougher for authorities to head off.

The Flat Rock police report did not indicate that the driver was arrested or charged, according to ClickOnDetroit. Officers have outlined the basic chain of events and their improvised delivery route, at least in the initial coverage, but have offered few additional details.
