Jacksonville is turning the St. Johns River into one long birthday party for America’s 250th, rolling out free, family-friendly celebrations across downtown on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. On the menu: Freedom Fest at Friendship Fountain, multiple entertainment stages along the Northbank and Southbank, and what organizers are calling the biggest Fourth of July fireworks show in city history.
The two-day celebration stretches the length of the riverfront, from Riverfront Plaza to the Riverwalk and RiversEdge Park, and is set to feature live music, contests, family activities and an army of food vendors.
According to a featured news release from the City of Jacksonville, Freedom Fest at Friendship Fountain runs 5:30 to 10 p.m. on July 3, with live performances, a patriotic light-and-music fountain show and free apple pies for the first 1,000 people through the gate. The release also notes additional activations along the Riverwalk and a range of vendors ready to feed the crowd.
Northbank fireworks and schedule
The city’s Special Events calendar lists Riverfront Plaza (2 W. Independent Dr.) as the Northbank hub on July 4 from 4 to 9:30 p.m., with live performances leading up to a 9 p.m. fireworks start, according to Special Events. The lineup includes Sal Gonzalez, Tobacco Road, Bold City Classics and Lane Pittman, along with student art exhibitions and family-focused activities.
Southbank and RiversEdge offerings
Freedom Fest at Friendship Fountain on July 3 will spotlight Bold City Brass, Navy Pride, Sal Gonzalez, Emily Mikus and Big Engine. On July 4, the Southbank schedule shifts to Scott Halls and Caribe Groove, plus a hot-dog-eating contest and cornhole for anyone looking to compete offstage, as reported by News4Jax.
RiversEdge Park will run its own program from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 4, featuring music, food vendors and a synchronized view of the same fireworks show, giving spectators multiple vantage points along the river.
Parking, bridge closures and timing
The Special Events page warns that the Main Street Bridge and Acosta Bridge are expected to close from about 8:45 to 10:30 p.m. for the evening fireworks display and notes that downtown garages will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Arriving early, using public transit when possible and checking the event page for updated road-closure maps and parking options are all recommended, according to Special Events.
