Gay Street is getting a new game-day headquarters. MaGerk’s Pub & Grill is moving into downtown West Chester, taking over the former Iron Hill Brewery space at 3 W. Gay St. The Maryland-born pub chain is set to bring its Philly cheesesteaks, smash burgers and rotating lineup of local beers to the borough’s main dining strip. Construction crews are already working inside, and a public opening is still several months out.
The West Chester expansion was first reported by What Now, which noted that the plan, initially tipped to the outlet by The Philadelphia Inquirer, will plant the Dolaway brothers’ concept at 3 W. Gay St. The report spotlights MaGerk’s menu of shareable plates, wings and the chain’s signature orange crush cocktails. Landlord John Barry told the outlet the opening is likely still months away as the team continues gutting and renovating the space.
According to MaGerk’s Pub & Grill, the concept traces its roots to Baltimore’s Federal Hill and was co-founded by brothers John and Paul Dolaway. The company already runs Pennsylvania locations in Fort Washington, Horsham, Lionville, Royersford and Langhorne, along with a larger outpost in Bel Air, Maryland, and another in Elon, North Carolina. Typical MaGerk’s spots feature multiple TVs for game days and a casual, sports-bar style dining room geared toward groups and families.
Space Once Home To Iron Hill
The Gay Street address has sat empty since Iron Hill abruptly closed and the building owner purchased the restaurant’s remaining assets, local outlet Hello West Chester previously reported. That sale included furniture, kitchen equipment and the liquor license, a package meant to make it easier to land a new tenant. For downtown West Chester, a recognizable regional chain moving in could help revive some of the foot traffic and dinner crowds that disappeared when Iron Hill shut its doors.
When To Expect It
There is still no official opening date. Renovations and permitting are ongoing, and the full buildout could stretch for months, according to What Now. The pub group is also reported to have another Pennsylvania location in the works in Wyomissing, and diners are encouraged to keep an eye on the chain’s website for formal announcements.
For West Chester residents and downtown business owners, MaGerk’s arrival marks another step in the borough’s post-Iron Hill rebound, a shift that could reshape where fans huddle for game nights and where weekend visitors decide to grab a bite along Gay Street.
