Greenville police are searching for 33-year-old Garrett Burr after officials say he walked away from his assisted living home on Sterling Pointe Drive in Winterville around 8 p.m. Friday. Burr was last seen wearing blue plaid pajamas and tan shoes. He is about 6 feet tall, weighs roughly 186 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. Officers say Burr has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and may be trying to get to Raleigh.
As reported by WITN, Burr left the assisted living home Friday evening and has not been located. The Greenville Police Department is asking anyone who spots him to call the department at (252) 329-4315 or Crime Stoppers at (252) 758-7777.
Why officers are concerned
Police often classify missing adults with serious mental-health conditions as higher-risk cases. Guidance from the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing notes that mental illness is a factor that raises urgency in missing person investigations. The guide explains that searches for vulnerable adults commonly include checks of hospitals, jails, shelters, and public-transit routes as investigators look for someone who may be disoriented or seeking medical care.
How the public can help
If you think you may have seen Burr, police say you should not approach him. Instead, call 911 or the Greenville Police nonemergency line and provide officers with his description and as much location detail as possible. Tools such as the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) help coordinate records across agencies, and timely tips are often crucial to locating missing adults.
Anyone with information about Burr’s location is urged to contact the Greenville Police Department at (252) 329-4315 or Crime Stoppers at (252) 758-7777. WITN's report did not include an update on Burr's status after publication.
