A man is in critical condition after police say a group attack in Pittsburgh's East Liberty neighborhood left him unconscious and not breathing Thursday afternoon. First responders performed CPR at the scene before rushing him to a hospital, where he remains in dire condition. Several people were detained nearby, and witnesses are now helping detectives piece together what happened.
Victim found collapsed at East Liberty intersection
According to Pittsburgh police, officers were called to the intersection of South St. Clair Street and Eva Street at 4:50 p.m., where they found the man unresponsive in the street. First responders administered CPR until he could be transported to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, WPXI reported.
Neighborhood context
The stretch of East Liberty is no stranger to trouble this year. In March, officers responded to a stabbing outside the Target on Penn Avenue after crowds gathered to watch vehicle "donuts" and "burnouts." That incident ended with a 17-year-old being taken to the hospital, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Investigation underway
Police say several males of unknown age were detained at the scene and are being questioned, and multiple witnesses are speaking with investigators, WPXI noted. Detectives are reviewing interviews and any available footage as they work to determine what sparked the attack.
City officials have not yet released the victim's name or announced any potential charges. This story will be updated as authorities share more information.
