A state prison inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown was found dead in his cell late Wednesday night, the latest in a troubling run of fatalities inside Maryland’s prisons.
Authorities identified the man as 32-year-old Colin Wolf. He was discovered unresponsive in his cell at about 11:15 p.m., and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene, according to police.
Maryland State Police told WBAL-TV that an autopsy is planned and that investigators have identified another inmate as a suspect. Troopers said they believe Wolf’s cellmate was in the cell at the time of his death. The suspect’s name is being withheld while investigators pursue potential charges.
Part of a recent string of prison deaths
Wolf’s death is the latest in a series of inmate fatalities reported across state facilities in recent weeks. Earlier this month, 27-year-old Kelvin Hite was found dead in Roxbury, with investigators again identifying his cellmate as a suspect in that case, according to The Daily Record.
Reporting from MDBayNews notes that Maryland recorded 14 inmate homicides in 2025, the highest number in at least ten years.
Investigation and next steps
Maryland State Police homicide detectives are leading the investigation into Wolf’s death, working alongside internal investigators with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services to gather evidence.
Officials said their findings will be turned over to prosecutors to determine whether criminal charges are warranted. Corrections officials had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
