The Halifax area is in shock after Taryn Morgan, 45, an agriculture teacher at Upper Dauphin Area High School, was found fatally shot at her Jefferson Township home on May 21. Authorities say her husband, 46-year-old Dennis Morgan, then shot himself and was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The couple, known locally as the owners of the Carsonville Hotel, leave behind three children, and the school community has already started rallying around the family. Pennsylvania State Police are treating the case as an apparent murder-suicide.
State police say the shooting followed a domestic dispute
Pennsylvania State Police say the violence followed a domestic dispute at the Morgans' home on Carsonville Road. Troopers reported finding Taryn Morgan dead at the scene and her husband suffering from what they described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center and was "not expected to survive," according to WGAL. Investigators told reporters there was no ongoing threat to the public and said the case remains very much active.
Students and colleagues remember a mentor
Within the halls of Upper Dauphin, Morgan was described as more than just a classroom teacher. The school's agricultural program and district officials called her a mentor who guided countless students over the years. In the days after her death, the program held a greenhouse plant sale to raise money for the family, according to CBS Pittsburgh. School posts also note that Morgan had been an educator for more than two decades and was a mother of three.
Couple owned a popular local restaurant and event space
Dauphin County property records show the Morgans purchased their Jefferson Township home in 2016 and later bought the Carsonville Hotel at 3176 Powells Valley Road in 2018. When reporters visited the property after the shooting, they found the venue closed with a sign on the door. The Carsonville has long served as a local hangout for live music and community events, and neighbors told reporters they were stunned by the news. Those property details and observations were reported by WGAL.
District offers counseling while investigators press on
The Upper Dauphin Area School District announced that counselors and staff would be available to support students and families grappling with the loss. The district's contact page lists the high school office at 717-362-8181 for those seeking help (Upper Dauphin Area School District). Pennsylvania State Police have not released a motive, and as of Monday night, had not provided an update on Dennis Morgan's condition, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Pennsylvania State Police barracks handling the case.
