Free hot meals in the back of the plane are about to become a relic for most Hawaiian Airlines mainland flights. The carrier says it will end complimentary Main Cabin meals on most long-haul domestic routes and pivot to a paid, pre-order menu created with Maui chef Sheldon Simeon. The shift kicks in July 1 and will apply to most flights between Hawaiʻi and the continental United States, with the HNL–JFK route staying under the old setup for now. Travelers who skip pre-ordering will still be able to buy snack boxes or items off a pau hana cart once they are in the air.

What changes and when

In a press release via PR Newswire, Hawaiian said the new Main Cabin program starts July 1 on most Hawaiʻi-mainland flights, again with the HNL–JFK route excluded. Guests will pick and pay for meals in advance through the airline’s website or the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app, with ordering available from two weeks before departure until 20 hours prior to takeoff.

Chef-driven menu

Hawaiian says Maui-based, James Beard–recognized chef Sheldon Simeon is behind the refreshed Main Cabin menu, which leans into island favorites and recipes designed to be prepared within 12 hours of departure. Sample options include crispy mochiko chicken with garlic noodles, a teriyaki chicken bento and corned beef hash with eggs. "This menu is inspired by the flavors I grew up with in Hawaiʻi - comforting, familiar and full of heart," Simeon said in the airline's release via PR Newswire.

What you’ll still get for free

The airline insists not everything free is disappearing. Hawaiian says Main Cabin guests will still get a welcome beverage, locally made snacks from partners such as Anahola Granola and Diamond Bakery, and a mahalo sweet from Hawaiian Host or Honolulu Cookie Company. The single complimentary sandwich that has typically shown up on most transpacific coach flights, however, is being phased out, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Passengers who do not pre-order will still have access to the pau hana cart and other retail snacks for purchase. Hawaiian also plans a limited Huakaʻi promotion that will give Hawaiʻi-resident loyalty members two complimentary Main Cabin meals when the new program rolls out.

Why Hawaiian says it’s doing this

The carrier is pitching the overhaul as an upgrade rather than a cutback, saying it will give guests more choice while serving fresher, locally inspired dishes and bringing more consistency to service across cabins as part of bigger brand changes. Hawaiian appointed Dell Valdez as executive chef for premium cabins in March, and its First Class and international Business Class cabins have already shifted to a pre-order model, according to Business Traveller. The move tracks with a broader industry trend toward paid pre-order meals that airlines say allow them to offer higher-quality hot dishes while reining in waste and costs.

How to pre-order and what to expect

Passengers will be able to pre-order Main Cabin meals through the "My Trips" section on HawaiianAirlines.com or via the Alaska Hawaiian mobile app, starting two weeks before departure and closing 20 hours before the flight. Prices will vary depending on the route and specific item. For a full look at menu options and step-by-step ordering details, Hawaiian directs customers to Hawaiian Airlines.

The change marks a significant break from Hawaiian’s long-running reputation for serving complimentary meals on mainland routes, and it is likely to stir up opinions among travelers who viewed the free tray as part of the experience. With summer travel ramping up, anyone who wants a hot meal on board would be wise to check the menu in advance and lock in a pre-order instead of counting on whatever is left in the snack cart.
