A domestic disturbance in central Las Vegas turned into the kind of Thursday night drama no neighbor wants, after a man allegedly assaulted a woman and then refused to come out of his home on the 3800 block of Hazelwood Street near University Center Drive and Twain Avenue. Police say he also kicked in the door of another resident’s home before barricading himself inside, bringing out negotiators and SWAT and clogging east-west traffic on Twain for several hours while officers worked to contain the scene and urged people nearby to stay away.
What police say
According to FOX5, officers first made contact with the suspect at his residence, but he refused to come out, prompting a barricade response. The outlet reports that the man had allegedly beaten a woman and then kicked a neighbor’s door before holing up inside, and that Metro asked the public to steer clear while the incident was still active. Authorities also warned drivers that both eastbound and westbound lanes on Twain would see major disruptions for several hours while police handled the situation.
SWAT and negotiation context
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department typically brings in its SWAT team and Crisis Negotiators for prolonged barricade calls, a pattern the agency highlighted in a recent news release about a similar standoff. Per the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, those deployments are designed to keep tense scenes as safe as possible and buy time for negotiators to work toward a peaceful outcome when they can. The department’s public information guidance also reminds residents to contact Metro’s PIO or Crime Stoppers if they have tips or video that might help investigators piece together what happened.
How common are these standoffs?
The Hazelwood barricade is the latest in a recent string of domestic-related standoffs across the valley, including an April 17 incident that drew SWAT to the northeast valley and led to lengthy road closures. Hoodline's earlier coverage of that episode described how neighbors often wake up to heavy police presence and surprise detours when these calls unfold. Local officials continue to urge anyone with information about these incidents to contact Metro so detectives can sort out the details.
This remains a developing story; FOX5 reported that officials were still working the Hazelwood scene and said more information would be released as the situation evolved. Hoodline will update this post as Metro provides additional details.
