A fire ripped through a single-wide trailer on San Antonio’s East Side on Wednesday, killing multiple dogs and drawing neighbors out as firefighters fought to get the flames under control, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.
According to KENS5, the department confirmed that “multiple dogs” died in the blaze, and crews stayed on scene to secure the trailer. The station’s video from the scene shows firefighters working around the damaged home as officials assess the aftermath. Authorities had not immediately released information about the dogs’ owners or what caused the fire.
Pets often at risk in home fires
Local coverage has repeatedly shown that when residential fires move fast, pets are often among the victims. As reported by KSAT, a December house fire on the Northeast Side left a woman displaced and her dog dead, underscoring how quickly smoke and intense heat can overwhelm animals inside a home.
How to reduce the risk
The American Red Cross recommends testing smoke alarms every month, practicing a home escape plan that gets everyone out in two minutes or less, and signing up for a home fire safety visit that can include free smoke alarm installation through its Sound the Alarm program. Local outreach efforts in San Antonio have also paired the fire department with community groups to distribute alarms and safety information, as described by HERE San Antonio. KENS5 reported that, as of its latest update, officials had not released any additional details on the East Side trailer fire.
