Henderson’s police ranks are on the verge of a major makeover, with 56 fresh recruits lining up for their first inspection at the city’s police academy. The Henderson Police Department is calling it the largest academy class in its history, a surge that could cut vacancies down to almost zero after months of hard-charging recruiting in one of the valley’s fastest-growing cities.
The department said on Facebook that "history is being made" as the 56 recruits passed through their first inspection, calling the moment "a direct result of the city's sustained commitment to public safety." The post shares photos from the inspection and gives a nod to city leaders for keeping the pressure on recruitment and retention.
Earlier this spring, roughly 41 recruits graduated in an April ceremony. Henderson’s biggest cop class drew local coverage, and FOX5 reported that the group completed about 27 weeks of training.
City officials have been quick to spotlight the pace of those hiring wins. The City of Henderson notes that HPD was able to knock officer vacancies down from 57 to 20 in a three-month stretch, a drop that leaders say is helping free up seasoned officers for more specialized assignments.
Training and next steps
The new recruits are set to move through the Southern Desert Regional Police Academy before they hit the streets on supervised patrol shifts with field training officers, according to the College of Southern Nevada. HPD’s academy program runs over multiple weeks and covers firearms safety, de-escalation tactics, emergency medical aid and defensive driving.
What this means for neighbors
City leaders say the influx of boots on the ground should tighten patrol coverage, cut back on overtime and give more breathing room for community policing efforts. The hiring wave is framed as part of a broader public safety strategy to keep Henderson ranked among the safest cities in the region, according to city materials.
HPD says the recruiting push is not slowing down and that the department is still advertising openings and hosting hiring events. Those interested in signing up can find details at JoinHPD, and the department plans to move recruits into field training as they secure certification.
