A 35-year-old Troy man was killed yesterday after his car left the roadway and smashed into a guardrail on M-59 in Rochester Hills. The driver, identified by police as Cody Trebush, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near Livernois Road.
Crash Details
Investigators told WXYZ that Trebush was driving at a high rate of speed when he failed to properly negotiate a curve, sending his vehicle off the road and into the guardrail. Deputies said he was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials added that excessive speed was a factor, and it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
M-59's Recent Incidents
This stretch of M-59 near Livernois has seen other serious incidents in recent years. An early-morning hit-and-run in March 2024 also ended in a death, as per Hoodline. That earlier crash closed eastbound M-59 for nearly five hours while deputies worked the scene.
Why Seat Belts Matter
Being ejected from a vehicle dramatically increases the likelihood of fatal injuries, and investigators point to both speed and lack of restraint as key concerns in single-vehicle crashes. Federal safety data show that wearing a lap-and-shoulder seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury for front-seat occupants of passenger cars by about 45 percent, according to the NHTSA. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says the investigation into the crash is ongoing and has not released additional details.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the collision, and authorities ask anyone with information to contact the department through its standard channels, WXYZ reported. We will update this post if the sheriff's office releases more details.
