A high-speed rollover on State Route 60 in Moreno Valley turned deadly Sunday afternoon, killing a 24-year-old woman and injuring an infant who was riding in the backseat. Emergency crews arrived to find the SUV’s driver had been ejected into the eastbound lanes and struck by another vehicle, while the child, secured in a car seat, escaped with only minor injuries. The crash choked traffic on the busy corridor for hours as first responders and investigators worked the scene.

Crash details

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at about 2:10 p.m. east of the 215 and 60 interchange near Day Street. Investigators say a 2014 Acura MDX was traveling at a high rate of speed and used the center median shoulder to pass other vehicles, then lost control and overturned multiple times.

As the driver hit the roadway, she was struck by a 2024 Tesla Model 3. She was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified by the Riverside County coroner as 24-year-old Cheyenne Phillips of Chino. The Tesla driver was not injured. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the crash, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Infant, road closures and response

The CHP reported that an infant child seated in a car seat in the backseat of the Acura sustained minor injuries. Officers issued a SigAlert that shut down southbound lanes for several hours while the on-scene investigation continued. All lanes were reopened a little before 4 p.m.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam video from the area to contact the CHP’s Accident Investigation Unit.

Investigation

CHP investigators say they are still working to determine whether drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash and have not announced any arrests or charges. Anyone with information is urged to contact Accident Investigation Unit Officer I. Esparza at 951-324-7210. Officials say they plan to release additional details as the investigation confirms more information.
