A quiet delivery run in North Philadelphia turned terrifying Tuesday night when a thief stole a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a sleeping 5-year-old boy inside. The boy was soon found alone on the street by neighbors, and officers quickly reunited him with his family. Police said the child was not hurt. An investigation is underway and no arrests have been announced.
How the Theft Unfolded
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told NBC10 Philadelphia that the boy's mother had briefly stepped out of the SUV around 7:50 p.m. to drop off packages when a thief jumped behind the wheel and took off with the vehicle and the child. According to Small, the suspect stopped after about two blocks on the 2900 block of Stillman Street, took the still-sleeping boy out of the Jeep, then drove away again. The stolen SUV was later abandoned about a half-mile away near Westmoreland Street and West Hunting Park Avenue. Officers responded after neighbors spotted the child on the street and called police.
Neighbors Spotted the Boy, Police Say
Coverage by Daily Voice also reports that neighbors alerted authorities after seeing the child alone, and that officers found him unharmed and returned him to his family. The outlet notes the theft happened while the mother was out making deliveries and that investigators are still working to identify and locate the suspect.
Safety Reminders for Caregivers
National child-safety guidelines stress that children should never be left alone in or around vehicles, even for a quick errand. The American Academy of Pediatrics and partner organizations write in American Academy of Pediatrics that "No child of any age should be left unattended in or around a vehicle," and they recommend practical steps such as locking vehicles, securing keys and arranging alternate supervision to reduce the risk of opportunistic theft and heat-related harm.
