A late-night stab attack outside a southeast Houston apartment complex left a 42-year-old woman and her 69-year-old husband seriously injured Wednesday, after what witnesses describe as a chaotic scene that started at a nearby convenience store and spilled into the neighborhood.
Houston police say a 40-year-old woman is in custody after the couple was stabbed multiple times around 9 p.m. in the 8600 block of Broadway. Despite their injuries, the victims managed to make it back to their upstairs unit, where family members called 911. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been released.
According to Click2Houston, investigators say the suspect first caused a disturbance at a nearby convenience store, pulled out a knife, and chased a man away. She then walked into the apartment complex, where witnesses said people started running.
Police say the woman allegedly threatened a mother and her 7-year-old child, who were able to get back to their unit unharmed. A short time later, she encountered a group of four people outside. Two of them got away, but the 42-year-old woman and her husband were stabbed multiple times.
Police Response and Investigation
Officers took the suspect into custody without further incident. Investigators are now trying to determine whether she was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the attack. Police say the woman mentioned taking seizure medication, though it is still unclear where she lives.
The investigation remains active, and detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing the sequence of events that turned a weeknight at the complex into a crime scene.
Legal Next Steps
Authorities have not yet announced formal charges. If prosecutors pursue an assault case, the use of a knife could elevate the case to aggravated assault, which is a felony under Texas law. The offense is defined in Texas Penal Code Section 22.02.
Neighbors Shaken
Residents at the complex say the violence sent people running and drew a strong response from Houston police, who flooded the area as the scene was secured. Officers processed the courtyard and surrounding areas while investigators spoke with witnesses late into the night.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Houston police as the investigation continues.
