Milwaukee’s lakefront is waking up on the gray and chilly side this morning, with temperatures parked in the mid 40s (around 46°F) and a stiff east wind blowing in off the lake. A few light showers or sprinkles may pass through into mid morning before clouds thin to partial sunshine and readings crawl up toward a cool high near 57°F this afternoon. Lifeguards and park crews are on guard as rough water is expected to keep Lake Michigan swimming unsafe through Saturday.
Beach Danger Through Saturday
The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for the Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha lakeshore, warning of life threatening 3 to 5 foot waves and dangerous longshore currents through Saturday afternoon. Officials are urging people to stay out of the water and off piers and breakwalls, and small craft operators should be prepared for rough conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
What To Expect Today
Commuters along the lakeshore could run into some light showers or drizzle this morning, although visibility should remain decent for drivers. Persistent east winds of 10 to 15 mph will keep shoreline neighborhoods noticeably cooler than inland spots, with most locations topping out in the mid to upper 50s. Tonight brings a low chance of showers after midnight and a low near 47°F.
Weekend And Memorial Day Outlook
Conditions start to feel more like late May by the end of the weekend. Highs are expected to climb into the 70s on Sunday, and Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, looks much warmer with highs near 82°F and light southerly winds. A few isolated showers could pop up around the edges of this warm stretch, and boaters are advised to keep checking conditions before heading out, per the National Weather Service.
The initial rip current risk was flagged in a May 20 piece, and you can revisit how cool winds turned the lakefront into a rip current danger zone. If lakefront time is on your agenda this weekend, opt for inland parks or other outdoor options and keep an eye on beach flag updates from Milwaukee County Parks.
