A 61-year-old Spring Hill woman died late Friday after her Kia Soul collided with a Ford E350 van at the intersection of Drayton Street and County Line Road. Troopers say the crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. on May 22. Emergency crews rushed the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The van’s driver, a 40-year-old Brooksville man, stayed at the scene while investigators documented the wreckage and gathered physical evidence.
Troopers: Left Turn Put Kia Directly In Van’s Path
According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers, the Kia was making a left turn across County Line Road when it moved into the path of an eastbound Ford E350, which then hit the smaller vehicle. Authorities have not released the names of either driver, and investigators have not yet said whether any charges will follow, according to Tampa Free Press.
Turning And Failure-To-Yield Crashes Are A Statewide Concern
Statewide crash records show that turning movements and failure-to-yield mistakes play an outsized role in serious wrecks. In its 2023 Traffic Crash Facts report, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles lists “improper turn” more than 22,000 times and “failed to yield right-of-way” more than 163,000 times among first-driver actions, categories that capture many intersection crashes. Those totals highlight why investigators carefully review sight lines, signal timing and vehicle positions at scenes like Friday’s collision, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
County Line Road Has Been Under The Microscope For Safety Upgrades
County Line Road (C.R. 578), which runs east to west between Pasco and Hernando counties, has been the focus of long-running studies and proposed widening projects meant to boost both capacity and safety. Project development and environment documents from District 7 of the Florida Department of Transportation lay out options to expand and shift segments of C.R. 578 between U.S. 19 and U.S. 41, reflecting years of concern about congestion and crashes along that stretch, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
Troopers are still working to reconstruct the crash and interview witnesses, and the Florida Highway Patrol has not said whether any charges are expected, according to Tampa Free Press. Officials have released few additional details while the investigation remains active.
