A late-night collision in the Juniata section of Philadelphia left two people dead and two others hospitalized on Saturday, turning a routine weekend night into a tragedy at a well-traveled intersection.
The crash happened just before 11:45 p.m. at K Street and Hunting Park Avenue and involved a gold Lexus and a black Jeep Cherokee, according to police.
Crash details
Officers arriving at the scene found the driver of the gold Lexus dead inside the vehicle, and a passenger who had been thrown from the car later died at a hospital, according to 6abc.
Investigators said four people were inside the black Jeep Cherokee. Two of those occupants were taken to nearby hospitals, though officials have not released any information about their conditions.
Safety concerns on Hunting Park Avenue
Hunting Park Avenue is part of the city’s Vision Zero High Injury Network and has been singled out for safety upgrades under Philadelphia’s Complete & Safe Streets initiative, the city notes. Recent federal funding is expected to support corridor improvements along Hunting Park Avenue from Wissahickon Avenue to Roosevelt Boulevard, according to the City of Philadelphia.
City planners say the work is intended to cut down on collisions and make crossings safer along the busy corridor.
Investigation ongoing
Police are investigating whether alcohol played a role in the crash and have not released the names of the two people who died, or the current conditions of those who were hospitalized, 6abc reports.
Detectives are continuing to process the scene and review evidence as they work to determine what led to the deadly collision.
