A 23-year-old Long Beach man is behind bars on suspicion of murder and felony hit-and-run after a Saturday morning collision in Rancho Mirage that left a 57-year-old woman dead. Deputies say the crash near the intersection of Dinah Shore Drive and George Montgomery Way ended with the driver taking off, and investigators later arrested him after determining that alcohol was a factor.
Per a Riverside County Sheriff's Office news release, Palm Desert Station deputies were called to the intersection at about 8:09 a.m. Saturday. They found the victim, identified as 57-year-old Teresa Bowlin of Cathedral City, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said the other driver fled, and a search of the area led to an arrest without incident. The Palm Desert Station's Collision Reconstruction Team has taken over the investigation.
According to KTLA, deputies identified the suspect as 23-year-old Tyler Conant of Long Beach and booked him into the John Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of murder and felony hit-and-run. Authorities told reporters that Conant was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Investigation and public help
The Sheriff's Office says the probe is ongoing and investigators are still processing evidence from the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact Deputy Bret Meservey at (760) 836-1600 or Riverside County Sheriff's Dispatch at (760) 836-3215.
Legal implications
Conant's booking on murder and felony hit-and-run counts marks the start of a criminal case that will be handled by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors will decide whether to file formal charges and any potential enhancements as the investigation continues. A booking is not a finding of guilt, and Riverside County authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active.
