A routine Thursday morning drive on U.S. 422 in Auburn Township turned deadly when a motorcyclist was ejected from his bike after slamming into the back of a pickup truck, according to state investigators.

The rider, 45-year-old Monte Stamm of Mantua, was on a 2025 Yamaha when his motorcycle struck the rear of a 2021 Ram pickup around 10:30 a.m. near milepost 10, the Ohio State Highway Patrol told Cleveland.com. Stamm was thrown from the bike and taken to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, where he later died.

The pickup’s driver, a 56-year-old man, was wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries that were treated at the scene, troopers said.

Officials’ initial findings

Alcohol and drugs “do not appear to be factors in the crash,” troopers said, as reported by Cleveland.com. Investigators noted that Stamm was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision but was still ejected by the force of the impact before being transported to the hospital.

Investigation and road impacts

The Chardon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and briefly shut down lanes on Route 422 while first responders worked the scene and cleared debris.

Troopers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or captured it on dash-camera video to contact investigators as they work to piece together exactly how the deadly rear-end collision unfolded.
