Matthews residents were urged to stay sharp on Thursday after a run of apartment break-ins across town put neighborhoods on edge. Investigators say an unidentified person has been slipping into units by smashing sliding patio doors or forcing entry through the least visible doors that lead to shared or open areas.
Police released a photo of a person dressed in a black hoodie, black joggers and sneakers, asking the public to help put a name to the face. According to WCNC, investigators have not identified any suspects and have not said whether anyone has been arrested.
Police Share Image, Urge Extra Safeguards
The department pushed the surveillance image out on social media and followed it up with a round of practical advice. Officers urged tenants to double-check that doors and windows are locked, outdoor lighting is working, and any security cameras are actually recording and not just there for show. WSOC reported that police also recommended motion-activated lights and giving a trusted neighbor a heads-up when you will be out of town.
How Renters Can Fortify Sliding Doors
Sliding glass doors are often the soft spot in an otherwise solid apartment, and police say that is exactly where this intruder seems to be striking. Security experts recommend dropping a sturdy bar or similar device into the door track, adding a secondary lock or anti-lift devices, and installing glass-break or motion sensors that can alert you to tampering. Insurance and safety guides point out that these relatively inexpensive fixes, along with trimming back tall shrubbery and putting up visible cameras, can discourage opportunistic burglars and make it easier for police to identify suspects if a theft occurs, according to Insuranceopedia.
How To Report Tips
Anyone who recognizes the person in the photo or who noticed suspicious activity around local apartment complexes is asked to call the Matthews Police communications center at 704-847-5555 or submit a tip through the department. The Town of Matthews police pages list the same contact details and outline services such as home-security checks for residents who are worried about repeat incidents, according to the Town of Matthews.
