Jurors in McKeesport heard the defendant's own words this week as prosecutors played portions of a recorded three-hour police interview in the homicide trial of Isaac Smith, the man accused of killing 26-year-old Karli Short, who was about 17 weeks pregnant when she was shot in September 2021. Smith has repeatedly told detectives he had nothing to do with the killing, but prosecutors say other evidence points straight to him. The trial is expected to continue into next week.
In the courtroom, prosecutors cued up clips from the interview in which Smith insisted he was innocent and complained about swirling speculation. "I’ve heard so many different rumors, and they’re all so far-fetched," he told detectives, according to WPXI. The station reports the interview took place before Smith was charged, and that prosecutors are now using it to walk jurors through what they say are key inconsistencies in his story.
Ballistics And The Pawned Revolver
Alongside the interview, the state leaned on forensic evidence. Ballistics testing matched a bullet recovered from Short’s head to a Smith & Wesson revolver that Smith reportedly pawned days after the shooting, according to KDKA. Prosecutors walked jurors through the sale and chain of custody of that gun, presenting it as a central pillar of their case.
Paternity Testing Undercuts Defense Story
Another point of contention has been Short’s pregnancy. New lab results disclosed this month show Smith was not the father of Short’s unborn child, per WPXI. Prosecutors emphasized that this information was not available at the time of the shooting. Allegheny County Deputy District Attorney Ryan Kiray told the court that whatever Smith believed that night, he would not have been relying on a lab report. "At the time the defendant pulled the trigger, he did not have a DNA test in his hand," Kiray said, as reported by Law&Crime.
What Prosecutors Say Happened The Night Of The Killing
To fill in the timeline, prosecutors walked jurors through surveillance footage and witness accounts from the night of Sept. 13, 2021. The evidence shows Short leaving a back door on Furnace Alley shortly before she was shot and later found the next morning with a gunshot wound to the head, according to WTAE. In a sobering scene, Short’s father, former Penn State and NFL linebacker Brandon Short, sat in court as those images and sensitive testimony were presented to the jury.
Charges And What Is At Stake
Smith is charged with criminal homicide and criminal homicide of an unborn child. Prosecutors argue the evidence establishes both motive and identity, while the defense maintains there is no clear motive tying Smith to the crime, according to Law&Crime. The outlet reports the trial is expected to last roughly two weeks before jurors are sent to deliberate.
Family members and neighbors have been a steady presence as the case plays out, watching each new piece of evidence land. The court is scheduled to reconvene next week, with more witnesses and testimony set to shape the jury’s view of the night that left a young woman and her unborn child dead.
