Taylor’s planning commission has given a green light to a new Meijer Market at the northwest corner of Telegraph Road and Champaign Road, clearing the way for a roughly 75,000-square-foot grocery that city leaders say will add jobs and beef up local shopping options along the busy Downriver retail strip.
According to MLive, the commission approved plans on May 12 for a 75,097-square-foot Meijer Market at the site, which sits between a strip center anchored by Hook & Reel Seafood and Thrifty Florist. Mayor Tim Woolley called the decision “tremendous news for Taylor” and told the outlet that major grocery investments not only expand shopping variety but also “bring really solid jobs.”
What a Meijer Market Means
The Meijer Market concept zeroes in on fresh foods, specialty items, and locally sourced products rather than the broad general-merchandise mix associated with the company’s supercenters. The retailer has been rolling out these neighborhood-style markets in footprints that run up into the mid-70,000-square-foot range, while its traditional supercenters remain significantly larger. Industry outlet Grocery Dive has covered Meijer’s recent push into these smaller, grocery-first formats.
Other Retail Moves Along Telegraph
The Meijer Market is the latest in a string of retail moves along Telegraph. MLive reports that Kroger is planning a second major Taylor store, a Raising Cane’s has been approved at Telegraph and Eureka, and a Sheetz is nearing completion just south of the future Meijer site. ALDI has already opened on Eureka Road, according to the chain’s store listing, adding another low-price grocery option to the corridor.
Next Steps and Timeline
The planning commission’s approval removes a major hurdle, but the project is not quite shovel-ready. Site engineering reviews, city permits and final sign-offs still have to fall into place before construction can start. The Taylor Planning Commission agenda center posts agendas and packet materials online as it advances site plans and related zoning requests, and developers will need to meet city engineering conditions and secure building permits before any ground is broken.
For nearby residents, the Meijer Market is expected to bring more grocery choice and closer-to-home employment as the Telegraph corridor continues to be repositioned for new retail. If the project tracks with timelines typical of similar developments, construction and a hiring push could follow in the coming months.
