Donovan Mitchell turned Rocket Arena into his personal furnace Monday night, dropping 43 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers roared back to beat the Detroit Pistons 112-103 and knot their second-round series at 2-2. For a half, it looked like a grind. Then Mitchell caught fire, and the whole thing flipped.
Mitchell's Historic Second-Half Eruption
Mitchell managed just four points before halftime, then came out of the locker room like someone had hit a cheat code. He piled up 39 points in the second half alone, finishing with 43 and logging his eighth career 40-point playoff game.
Those 39 points after the break tied Sleepy Floyd's record for the most in a single half of a playoff game, according to ClickOnDetroit. Cleveland needed every bit of that heater to wrestle back control of the series.
Cavs' Third-Quarter Blitz Blows It Open
The turning point came fast. Cleveland opened the third quarter with a 22-0 run and racked up 38 points in the period, swinging what had been a tight contest into a one-sided affair in front of a loud home crowd.
The surge not only powered the 112-103 win, it also pushed the Cavs to a perfect 6-0 mark at home this postseason. The official recap on NBA.com has the full box score and play-by-play of the game-changing stretch.
Harden, Bench Step Up While Pistons Stumble
Mitchell did the headlining, but he was not alone. James Harden turned in a 24-point, 11-assist effort, and Cleveland got key help up and down the rotation.
On the other side, Detroit's bench was led by Caris LeVert, who also poured in 24 points. The Pistons, though, undercut their own work with 18 turnovers, including 10 before halftime, a number that loomed large in the loss, per the box score on FOX Sports.
What Comes Next
The victory evens the series at 2-2 and sends things back to Detroit for Game 5 on Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena, with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m. on ESPN, as noted by ClickOnDetroit.
Both teams have homework. Detroit has to tighten up its ball security in a hurry, while Cleveland needs to keep coaxing reliable offense from sources other than Mitchell if it wants this surge to last when the series swings back to Motown.
