Another delivery run in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood turned violent Friday night when a rider was stabbed and his e-bike stolen, according to police. The attack happened around 10:30 p.m. outside a convenience store on the 100 block of East Allegheny Avenue, after a large group surrounded the worker. The man was taken to a hospital, where he is in stable condition. No arrests have been reported.
What police say
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace said the rider was surrounded in front of the store, then stabbed, and his e-bike was taken. The station reported the attack happened at about 10:30 p.m. and that the victim is listed in stable condition at a hospital. Police are investigating and have not reported any arrests. Anyone with information is urged to call the department at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip through the Philadelphia Police Department online form.
Why e-bikes are a target
Crimes targeting delivery workers and their e-bikes have become a growing problem in many U.S. cities. High-value electric bikes can be quickly resold or stripped for parts, making them an attractive target. National reporting has detailed how workers in places such as New York City have organized recovery networks and pushed for better protections after repeated thefts and violent robberies, according to Fortune.
Kensington's recent violence
The stabbing comes amid a year of repeated violence in Kensington. In late March, a daylight knife attack left a man critically injured, intensifying concerns about public safety in the neighborhood. That daylight stabbing in late March highlighted ongoing pressure on police and community groups to respond to recurring violent incidents in the area.
How to help
