A Tuesday morning fire at the BurgerIM in University Circle sent workers and customers rushing onto the sidewalk, thick smoke pouring out as flames drew a heavy emergency response. Police quickly blocked part of Euclid Avenue while firefighters attacked the blaze, and commuters were urged to steer clear as the scene unfolded.
According to WKYC, the University Circle Police Department took to Facebook to warn drivers that westbound Euclid Avenue was closed from East 115th Street to Ford Drive. The department asked motorists to find alternate routes and avoid the area while crews handled the emergency. Officials had not yet released a cause for the fire.
Fire Response And Timeline
Flames were reported around 9:20 a.m. in the 11400 block of Euclid Avenue, where crews from the Cleveland Division of Fire arrived to battle what was described as an interior restaurant fire. WOIO reported that firefighters remained on scene working the blaze and that the station had reached out to the Cleveland Division of Fire for further details.
As the fire was knocked down, firefighters moved to chase hotspots and ventilate the building, while police maintained a secure perimeter around the block to keep onlookers and traffic at a safe distance.
Streets And Campus Traffic Disrupted
The shutdown landed in the heart of a busy uptown stretch of Euclid Avenue that serves Case Western Reserve University and nearby medical centers. Per University Circle Inc., that corridor is a primary weekday-morning artery for students, hospital staff and neighborhood workers.
With lanes blocked and emergency vehicles crowding the street, commuters and campus visitors were told to allow extra time, follow police direction and look for alternate ways around the closure until the scene was cleared.
Authorities had not confirmed any injuries, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation, WKYC noted. City and campus public-safety units were visible as crews worked, and investigators are expected to go through the building once it is deemed safe.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as officials release more information and traffic restrictions are lifted. Until then, drivers are urged to avoid the immediate stretch of Euclid Avenue near the restaurant and keep an eye on local traffic reports.
