A quiet welfare check on a Northside Houston home turned into a death investigation Friday morning after police found 66-year-old Vailua Leigh dead inside a residence on the 4200 block of Quitman Street.
Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced Leigh dead at the scene, and detectives with the HPD Homicide Division have launched an active investigation into what happened inside the home.
According to MyTexasDaily, officers were called to 4206 Quitman Street around 11:10 a.m. Friday for a welfare check and discovered Leigh inside. The outlet reports that an autopsy will determine her cause of death and confirms that homicide detectives were on scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
The City of Houston's active-incident feed shows that emergency crews were in the area shortly after the call. An entry logs an "EMS EVENT" on Quitman Street at about 11:53 a.m. Friday, lining up with the reported timeline of the welfare check, per the publicly available City of Houston Active Incidents feed.
What investigators are asking
Houston Police Homicide detectives H. Martinez and S. Chettry are identified in reporting as leading the case. So far, authorities have not announced any suspects or arrests, and they are keeping details close while they sort out what unfolded inside the Quitman Street home.
Investigators are asking anyone who might know something to speak up. Tipsters can contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, according to MyTexasDaily.
Next steps in the probe
Officials say the autopsy will determine the cause and manner of Leigh's death, and detectives plan to release additional information once the forensic work is in. For similar cases, the City notes that autopsy findings and follow-up investigative results guide whether any criminal charges are filed, per the City of Houston.
